C Major Pentatonic (C4-C6)
The Duo is a distinctive instrument with an ergonomic curved design. Accessible from both sides, this instrument can be enjoyed by up to four players. Tuned to the pentatonic scale, the left and right-hand side are mirrored and the scale is C-major spanning 2 octaves from C4 to C6.
Duo [n pl duos, dui] a. a pair of performers
The Duo is built as standard with half aluminum notes and half GRP notes in the color of purple-heart wood. Each of these materials gives a distinct sound when played: the aluminum will produce a bright, clear tone when struck, while the GRP is fast and punchy.
The notes of the Duo have no wires or strings and are individually and securely attached to a high-density polyethylene backboard below which sits black anodized aluminum resonators offering maximum vibration with incredible resonance and durability. Each resonator is individually capped with a polyurethane rain baffle. Finally, stainless steel security fixings deter vandalism and prevent the theft or removal of the instrument.
If the half and half split is not for you, the Duo is also available on request with either all aluminum notes or all GRP notes.
The curvaceous design is not just about looking stylish. The wave makes it easier for individuals with limited range of movement, or players in wheelchairs, to reach all of the notes. Eye contact can present difficulty for some people living on the autistic spectrum, with many only able to process one sensory system at a time. The Duo was designed to allow two people to interact and make music together without the need to look directly at each other; allowing them to concentrate entirely on the auditory process, comfortably and in their own space.
Playing the Duo is effortless and so friends, siblings, classmates, colleagues or even complete strangers can come together, explore with rhythm and make some great music!

Christy Schink - Associate Director of Youth and Outreach Services Librarian, Scenic Library Missouri
We have Soprano Quartet instruments at 5 of our 9 library branches and are hoping to add them to all of our branches. We were looking for something to pull people out onto our outdoor patios in our new buildings, and these have been perfect. The company is great to work with and their products are exceptionally high quality.
Principal Carmen Montero Graf, Ed.D. East Garner Elementary School, Garner, North Carolina
“Our new Music Teacher at East Garner Elementary School will be taking lots of lessons in the playground using the new instruments this year. I’m excited to see if we have any budding musicians and how we can help nurture their talent.”
Meet the Percussion Play App
Music for the Great Outdoors.
Download our App and play our outdoor Akadinda with just your device and fingertips!
The App also includes a comprehensive resource for landscape architects, playground designers, senior living managers, school or nursery leaders, music therapists, or park and recreation professionals. Information contained on the App includes; installation instructions, videos, dimension and plan drawings, product certificates, and lots and lots of images.
Why would you need the App? The app is “native” to the device on which it’s designed to run so it loads and operates faster than a responsive website on the same device. Additionally, once downloaded, the app doesn’t need an Internet connection to work, which means it can always be opened and used. This is handy when you're not connected and want a critical piece of information whilst in the field.
About Percussion Play
Outdoor Musical Instruments should, of course, be heard and an important factor in choosing the right instrument is the sound it makes. By selecting an instrument, you will be able to listen to a sound recording or watch a short video of the instrument being played.
There is no greater joy than finding the right instrument and we hope this makes it easier for you to select the right outdoor musical instrument for you, your school, or your outdoor environment or play area.
Percussion instruments are the oldest type of musical instrument with many different musical personalities. As our Company name implies, all our instruments are true percussion instruments, designed explicitly for permanent outdoor installation.
Constraints of volume and space disappear outdoors and players can experiment and explore the sounds of these large-scale percussion instruments freely.
The term percussion means ‘struck’ and strictly speaking percussion instruments are those that will produce a sound when they are struck with a beater, mallet, or hand. New instruments are always being invented and added to the percussionist’s repertoire – likewise, Percussion Play is always developing and expanding its range of outdoor musical instruments.
For example the recent launch of Inspired By Nature, a collection of nature-themed botanical outdoor musical instruments beginning with musical flowers. So be sure to check back regularly to see what’s new in the world of outdoor percussion!
